Arguably the most beautiful sailing ships of all times, the rakish Baltimore clippers had an influence on American history and naval architecture far out of proportion to their brief lifespan. During the War of 1812, the superior speed and weatherliness of these revolutionary new vessels enabled American privateersmen to destroy heavily escorted British convoys repeatedly, with little risk of interference from lumbering British escorts. One audacious American commander even went so far as to nail a notice to the door of Lloyd's of London declaring the British Isles under siege! The losses suffered by British commerce were catastrophic. Far more than the highly publicized battles between British and American frigates like the java and the Constitution, the depredations of the Baltimore clippers helped bring the War of 1812 to a close. After the war, the Baltimore clipper's reputation grew tarnished, when the low-capacity flyers found their employment options reduced to supporting Latin American revolutions-or carrying humán cargo. Yet despite this fali from grace, the revolutionary advancements in naval architecture that accompanied the development of these Prides of Baltimore spawned the great age of clipper ships, the very first of which was the shiprigged Baltimore Clipper Ann McKim. This book telis the whole story of the Baltimore clippers-from their birth on Maryland's Eastern Shore through their fali from grace to their rebirth in the 1970s along the shores of Baltimore's renovated waterfront, including the true account of the tragic loss of the replica schooner Pride of Baltimore, and the building of her new, larger sistership, Pride of Baltimore II.
