The third edition has been thoroughly revised to reflect recent developments in various areas of the law, including law of the sea, state immunity and the status of foreign investments. The book provides a comprehensive account of the law of peace based upon the modern practice of States and international organizations and the jurisprudence of international tribunals.
The technical aspects of the subject are emphasized but the issues are reviewed in relation to considerations of policy. This is a textbook suitable for the student willing to tackle pubUc international law on the same terms as other legal subjects. It also provides a convenient up-to-date work of reference for practitioners.
Ian Brownlie is Professor of International Law in the University of London. His publications include International Law and the Use offeree by States (Clarendon Press, 1963) and Basic Documents in International Law (Clarendon Press, 2nd Ed., 1972). Ian Brownlie is Professor of International Law in the University of London. His publications include International Law and the Use offeree by States (Clarendon Press, 1963) and Basic Documents in International Law (Clarendon Press, 2nd Ed., 1972). He is the joint editor of The British Year Book of International Law (Clarendon Press) and an Associé de l'Institut du Droit International.
From some reviews of the second edition:
a textbook which is entitled to great respect and which will earn the gratitude of all international lawyers.
F. A. Mann in The British Year Book of International Law 1972-73
. Brownlie has now clearly moved into a leading position among the works on International Law in the English Language.
D. H. N. Johnson in Journal of the Society of Public Teachers of Law
Despite the appearance of several competitors since the publication of the first edition, Dr Brownlie's book holds its place as a lucid exposition of the principles of the law of peace and, with the inclusion of the new material, is probably the best single-volume treatment of the subject available.
C. A. Hopkins, The Cambridge Law Journal
In 1976 the second edition received the award of the Certificate of Merit of the American Society of International Law. The Society's citation described the book as "a work of great distinction". Vissza
