I Tom Hutchinson is a Teaching Fellow and co-ordinator of in-service teacher training at the Institute for English Language Education, University of Lancaster. His special research area is the communicative teaching of grammar.
I Project English was awarded first prize in the English Spealing Union's Duke of Edinburgh Book Competition 1986. The prize is awarded annually to the author of the coursebook which the judges consider to have the greatest potential influence on the teaching and learning of English.
Project English is a three-year English course which takes young teenagers from beginner to intermediate level.
Its key features are:
¦ A grammar based analytical approach. In Project English 1 and 2 grammar is treated as a problem-solving activity, and the pupils are encouraged to work out grammar rules for themselves. In Project English 3 greater weight is given to the functional side of language which provides an opportunity to revise grammar from a different angle.

¦ Project work. Through project tasks, pupils are given the opportunity to talk and write about their own lives, and to relate the language they have learned to their own experience.
¦ Entertaining topics. Project English 3 is based on the idea of The Canterbury Tales. A group of young people run a company called Canterbury Holidays and entertain each other by talking about their experiences and travels.
