This introduction to materials science is written primarily for higher technician and first-year undergraduate students of engineering. It will alsó prove useful to those students of metallurgy who need to extend their knowledge to include the properties of nonmetallic materials. The book seeks to relate the strengths of engineering materials to the forces that operate between the fundamental particles contained in them. To help students who have not taken chemistry as a school subject, the relationship between atomic structure and chemical bonding is dealt with in the first three chapters. Similarly, an elementary discussion of van der Waal's forces is included so that the reader can compare and contrast the mechanical properties of metals with those of plastics materials.
