I found Prophets on the Right fascinating. Not that I am prepared to make heroes of Lawrence Dennis et al; their slide into the lunatic fringe remains a fact. But it is important to know that they, as well as Senator Taft, foresaw and fought against the evils of American globalism at a time when people like me were all for shoul-- dering the free man's burden. -Anthony Lewis

These men defied the almost universal opinion of the times by opposing American entrance into the world wars. All argued against American globalism and excessive presidential power.
CHARLES A. BEARD, an eminent A mer-ican historian who supported Wilson during the First World War, broke with Roosevelt for conspiring with Churchill to bring the United States into World War II without the consent of Congress. Beard was fiercely attacked and was considered a titan.
OSWALD GARRISON VILLARD, grandson of the great abolitionist Lloyd Garrison, was a pacifist and a liberal columnist.
JOHN T. FLYNN was an economist and a New Dealer and wrote regularly for The New Republic.
Both fought the growing power of the Executive, American defense of other nations' imperial possessions, and the Cold War; both were labeled rightists, and both died embittered and isolated. Flynn became a

crusader for Joseph McCarthy and, later, an early opponent of U.S. intervention in Vietnam.
SENATOR ROBERT A. TAFT opposed the Korean War and our deepening engagement in Asian battles, as well as the Cold War rhetoric in which the United States cast itself as the world's policeman.
LAWRENCE DENNIS is the most enigmatic figure. A self-labeled "fascist," he attempted (unconvincingly) to distinguish between the fascism of Europe and an American version that would bring about strong leadership as a response to the growing statism of the New Dealers. Dennis opposed going to war to fight for imperialists and corporatists, and opposed warring against the Communists.
Defying the consensus, all of them looked for answers to the traps of interventionism.
But the answers were elusive, and these men, complex and often inconsistent, were unable to persuade their peers of what appear to be prophetic fears about the dangers of promiscuous American military interventionism.
RONALD RADOSH is a professor of history at the City University of New York and the author of American Labor and U.S. Foreign Policy.
