Pruning Ornamental Shrubs is a rewarding activity for the experienced gardener. A well pruned shrub, in contrast to its neglected neighbour, has good shape and balance, is healthy and vigorous, and flowers better. Good pruning enhances the effects of leaf shape, size and colour. Evergreens will maintain their decorative qualities to the full, and hedges can be pruned to promote strong, dense growth for maximum screening. Shrubs with coloured bark such as dogwoods and willows are pruned to produce a bright display of winter colour.
But which shrubs to prune, and how, and when? Time and method are critical. Not all shrubs need to be pruned every year: without proper guidance, damaging mistakes are all too easily made. In this fully illustrated handbook, written by two experienced gardeners for those who are just beginning, the authors explain the basic principles of pruning and show how they are applied to a wide range of popular ornamental shrubs, including roses, heathers, wall shrubs and climbers. They offer helpful advice on how to assess each plant before pruning, the rejuvenation of overgrown shrubs, pruning fans and espaliers, and the choice and correct use of pruning tools. This book will help the gardener get the best possible display from ornamental shrubs. A companion volume. Pruning Hardy Fruits, is available in this
