Professor Zaehner's selection covers all that is most valuable in ancient Hindu religious and philosophical literature. It begins with six hymns from the Rig-Veda and four others from the Atharva-Veda. The next and largest section of the book is devoted to the Upanishads, speculative treatises in prose and verse. It contains the shorter Upanishads in toto and all that is essential and of abiding interest from the remainder. The final section consists of the Bhagavad-Gita, by far the most popular of all the Hindu scriptures. The Gita, though it falls outside the canon of Hindu Scripture (Veda), has from the earliest times been held to rank equally with it
in authority.
