This book handles pollination nnechanisms in a broad sense-i. e., the conveyance ofthe pollen grain to the female gametophyte, the germination and growth of the male gametophyte, fertilization, modes of pollen dispersal, the mechanisms assuring or preventing self-pollination, all in the light of plant breeding and crop production, so that the discussions are restricted to angiosperms and gymnosperms. The first part of the book describes modes of reproduction in higher plants and discusses ecology and dynamics of pollination; the second, crops propagated by self-pollination and their specific breeding; the third details sexual reproduction in higher plants and the mechanisms involved in the prevention of self-pollination.
The book furnishes a broad foundation for crop production and plant breeding; it may also serve as a text in advanced plant breeding courses.
