Three Sociological Traditions is a concise intellectual history of sociology organized around the development of three schools of thought. While traditional histories of sociology focus on three key figures—Marx, Weber, and Durkheim—Randall Collins reorganizes sociology and shows us how sociological ideas are built up within three rival traditions. Marx and Weber, together with their followers make up the "conflict tradition"; Durkheim's "ritual solidarity tradition" stretches from predecessors such as Comte up through present-day sociologists such as Goffman and Basil Bernstein; and a "micro-interactionist" tradition stretches from Cooley, Mead, and Husserl through Blumer and Garfinkel.
Collins, one of the most lively and exciting writers in sociology today, traces the intellectual highlights of these three main schools from classical theories to current developments, introducing students to the roots of sociology and indicating the areas where progress has been made in our... Collins, one of the most lively and exciting writers in sociology today, traces the intellectual highlights of these three main schools from classical theories to current developments, introducing students to the roots of sociology and indicating the areas where progress has been made in our understanding, the areas where controversy still exists, and the direction in which sociology is headed. Students of introductory sociology, sociological theory, and the history of social thought will find this a fresh, thorough, and thought-provoking examination.
