Ray Houghton's first full season at Anfield could not have been more dramatic, or more tragic. Liverpool, runaway Champions of 1987-88, began the season uncertainly, despite the return of lan Rush. Their indifferent form culminated in a 3-1 mauling by Manchester United on New Year's Day which, in somé ways, was the turning point of the season. They emerged stronger than ever and began a run of victories which took them surging to the top of the table and to an FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest. A second double in four seasons loomed for the Reds. But, on 15 April, the semi-final at Hillsborough was halted after just six minutes after somé Liverpool fans spilled onto the pitch with the horrific news that people were being crushed to death on the terraces. In all, 95 people died in the chaos. For a while, Liverpoolt season hung in the balance and the players could not face playing football.
