GEORGES BRAQUE
by Raymond Cogniat

In its great diversity, Braque's work contains
such a vast wealth of material, both human
and aesthetic, that despite the innumerables
commentaries, most authors continue to discov-
er new aspects in it.
Raymond Cogniat, who in all his writings
reveals a desire to avoid labels and to penetrate
into, rather than superficially discuss, the art-
ist's thought, approaches Braque's work with
an open mind. Cogniat succeeds in defining the
complexity of the work, notably in the difficult
period during which Cubism was developing.
The various stages that follow each other in
Braque's life and that at first glance might
appear inconsistent, do fall into a logical se-

evolution of a great artist's thought and that
of the aspirations of a period seeking its
direction.

The various stages that follow each other in
Braque's life and that at first glance might
appear inconsistent, do fall into a logical se-
quence, which is simultaneously that of the
evolution of a great artist's thought and that
of the aspirations of a period seeking its
direction.
To understand Braque's contribution thoroughly,
it was necessary to wait until the point had
been reached where there was nothing further
to add to it Thus, we are now able to grasp
its global import and the reasons that it has
increased in importance with the passage of
time.
Interpreted in this fashion, Braque takes his
place in the succession of the greatest painters
in the French tradition, a tradition which is
continued and renewed by his originality.
In numerous writings Raymond Cogniat has
demonstrated his twofold desire to place an
artist within the context of his age and to
analyze his work in its individual character,
independent of that age. His works on Dufy,
Bonnard, and Chagall, published in this col-
lection, were conceived in the same spirit, and
each illustrates a high point in French twentieth-
century art.
53 full-color reproductions of lithographs and
paintings
