These Gifford Lectures, by the distinguished historian and author of the making of europe (Meridian Books), illumine Dawson's conviction about the essential unity of religion and culture and the pressing contemporary necessity of vivifying all human, social, and political activities by religious principle and practice. He exhibits the characteristics of his thesis by reference to the cultures of ancient Egypt and Greece, Hinduism, Islam, medieval Europe, and contemporary secular and religious culture in the West. In the process Dawson investigates the role of prophet, priest, and king as phases of both religion and culture.
