DETERMINISM AND FREEDOM IN THE AGE OF MODERN SCIENCE
Edited by Sidney Hook
"The participants—Brand Blanshard, William Barrett, H. L. A. Hart, Paul Edwards, Ernest Nagel, Percy Bridgman among others —are established philosophers and scientists who explore the issue with skill and sophistication. For the most part, however, they present their views with admirable clarity and with a concern for the perplexities that ordinary men feel when they turn to the question of freedom and determinism." Charles Frankel, New York Times Book Review.

DIMENSIONS OF MIND
Edited by Sidney Hook
"A symposium which can boast at least half a dozen interesting contributors is certainly impressive. This is the third such symposium Sidney Hook has edited in three years. He deserves our fullest appreciation." Frederick Schick, The New Leader.
"A summary would do scant justice to some of the general characteristics that contribute to the excellence of the book as a whole. One of these is the high level of scholarly competence on which the discussions move. Another is the seriousness with which the issues are faced—a seriousness sometimes punctuated by wit." Edna Heidbreder, Perspectives in Biology and Medicine.

RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE AND TRUTH
A SYMPOSIUM EDITED BY SIDNEY HOOK
This book is the record of a great discussion between some of the leading theologians of our time and some outstanding American humanists and philosophers. Paul Tillich, H. Richard Niebuhr, Gustave Weigel, John Hick, and other distinguished representatives of religious tradition confront searching criticisms of their key ideas by analytic philosophers (Paul Ziff), by rationalists (Brand Blanshard), pragmatists (Gail Kennedy), and philosophers of modern science. The concept of God, the nature of faith, and the meaning and truth of religious symbols are the three rubrics around which this interesting dialogue is organized.
Rarely in recent years has debate on these fundamental questions reached such levels of frankness and intellectual sophistication. The resurgence of modern theological thought has been one of the characteristic features of the last generation. In the record of these proceedings—the fourth annual meeting of the New York University Institute of Philosophy—the chief claims of the religious reaffirma-

tions of our time are challenged by the intellectual descendants of the Enlightenment. In addition, the nature of religious experience and its relation to language is explored in an original and perceptive fashion by Virgil Aldrich and William Alston.
Sidney Hook is Head of the All-University Department of Philosophy, New York University. Dr. Hook has edited the previous three symposia held by the New York University Institute of Philosophy. Vissza
