The work of Rembrandt (1606-1669) reveals a limidess breadth of perception. Despite the large number of paindngs, drawings and engravings he produced, all are imbued with a continuous, restless energy and transcended by a single and unique vision. His forceful use of light and shade to evoke an atmosphere, to emphasize the mystery, psychology and drama of his subject matter, set him apart from many of his contemporaries, while the rich golds, browns and reds of his later paintings reveal his genius as a colourist.
Although Rembrandt's art is universal and timeless, it is also firmly rooted in seventeenth-century Holland. His jortraits of individual patrons and the arge-scale group works, such as the celebrated Night Watch and Anatomy Lesson ofDr Tulp, provide an enduring record of the wea thy Dutch citizens who commissioned them. At the same time he depicts beggars and peasants, butchers and nursemaids with a compassion and accuracy which suggest where his sympathy lay.

An appreciation of his native countryside is evident in innumerable drawings and etchings which capture with delicate precision the waterways and flat, open landscapes around Amsterdam. Even the Biblical works betray a new philosophical approach to their subject matter. The artist is not merely illustrating the Scriptures, but offering his own interpretation of the emotions underlying specific incidents and relationships. Through his brushstrokes the melancholy Bathsheha becomes a real woman, not simply an Old Testament symbol, while the Christ of the Hundred Guilder Print is at once a human figure and the embodiment of healing and truth.
The illustrated introduction to this volume contains an analysis of the artist's life and times, providing a useful context for the 48 full-colour plates which follow. Each of these has been chosen to represent a specific period or aspect of Rembrandt's work and is accompanied by a detailed text. Vissza
