The Pelican History of Music
This second volume of the Pelican History of Music is particularly concerned with the social and artistic environment during the two centuries associated with Renaissance and Baroque music. By the mid fifteenth century the Church's monopoly of influence was gone: alongside its rites a wealth of courtly and civil occasions demanded music and opened the way to every kind of experiment.
Europe knew no musical frontiers and it is possible to trace a whole pattern of influence and counter-influence; the motet, the chanson, and early opera are much alike in their regional forms and adaptations.
Towards the end of the period the musician, like the artist, has become emancipated. Composers such as Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Purcell, and the Bachs are as individually distinct as the works that make them famous.
