The "Ars Hungarica" series is designed to present Hungarian architectural monuments of the great European styles. In this volume Rózsa Feuer-Tóth, a well-known scholar of the subject, describes outstanding examples of Renaissance architecture in Hungary.
Renaissance is just about the only style which reached Hungary immediately after its emergence. The palaces of Buda and Visegrád were established by a great patron of the arts, Matthias Corvinus, Ring of Hungary (1458-1490). Renaissance is just about the only style which reached Hungary immediately after its emergence. The palaces of Buda and Visegrád were established by a great patron of the arts, Matthias Corvinus, Ring of Hungary (1458-1490). They astonished even those of his contemporaries familiar with the creations of the Renaissance in Italy. Although the King's death did not result in a total suspension and cancellation of the building activities he had initiated in the central region of Hungary, which was soon to come under Turkish rule for a period of 150 years, only Archbishop Bakócz's chapel in the Cathedral of Esztergom has come down to us and bears witness to the flourishing of Renaissance architecture. In the i6th century Renaissance architecture survived only in Northern Hungary (today's Slovakia) and Transylvania, both of which managed to remain free of Ottoman domination.
The arrangements and designs characteristic of Renaissance architecture, its rich set of patterns and motifs, were apphed in the building and decoration of forts, castles, manor-houses and urban dwellings and later in folk art as well.
Based on her latest research findings, Rózsa Feuer-Tóth presents the techniques and practice of Renaissance architecture, the activities of outstanding foreign and native craftsmen, and, with the help of copious illustrations, the monuments themselves, some of which have survived only in fragments.
