ISBN 3-8055-3893-6 The productivity of research on the HLA system is due to the centraJ role of its class-l and class-ll products in the regulation of the immuné response and its value as an unmatched genetic marker system for population and family studies. This volume contains 10 contributions on the biological functions of HLA class-l and class-ll molecules and their polymorphism, elaborating both their established functions in the immuné system and their receptor-like function which is not necessarily restricted to immunological interactions. The first two chapters demonstrate the involvement of HLA class-l molecules in the killing by cytotoxic cells of influenza infected cejls and cells carrying minor histocompatibility antigens. The second cluster of papers presents two studies on the associations between HLA class-ll molecules and the hyporesponsiveness to gluten and Mycobacterium leprae as well as the predisposition to coelial disease and tuberculoid leprosy. The evidence and biological implications of interactions between HLA class-l molecules and a variety of structures such as viral proteins, neuropeptides, insulin receptors and penicillin are analyzed in the subsequent four chapters. The volume concludes with two studies covering the interactions of HLA class-ll molecules with processed antigén and iron-binding glycoproteins regulating myelopoiesis. Taken together, these reviews offer a thorough assessment of data on HLA molecules and their functional relevance to the prevention and treatment of disease. The book, which alsó sets forth intriguing new leads for further work, will be fascinating reading for microbiologists, virologists, immunologists, and clinical researchers. Vissza
