This is a difficult but a rewarding book. So far as its authors, two American professors, are aware, it is also practically unique.
In attempting to unite literary theory and criticism with research and literary history, they first clear the ground with a series of well-stated definitions of the nature and function of literature, of literary history, theory, criticism and so forth. They then proceed from a discussion of such external aspects of literature as biography, psychology, and social setting to a consideration of the intrinsic qualities of the written word. Their later chapters on euphony, rhythm, metre, image, metaphor, myth, on style in general, and the art of narration tend to encourage - as they aim to do - a proper analysis and appreciation of the text, the whole text, and nothing that is not reasonably relevant to the text.
