ALBERT SCHWEITZER
It is now more than fifty years since Albert Schweitzer first went to Lamba-rene, in what is now Cabon, to practice medicine and found a hospital. In that time he has become a universal symbol of altruism, self-sacrifice and dedication.
Because of his legendary fame as a medical missionary, other equally im-portant aspects of his life are not so well known. They deserve to be, and it is the aim of this book to present one of these aspects. Schweitzer is, among other things, an acconiplished musician, an authority on the Bible (his early investigations of the New Testament and the life of Jesus are classics of modern Biblical study), an expert on animal and plant life, and a thinker whose ooncern for the problems of the human spirit and whose methods of ex-pressing this concern raise him to the stature of one of the world's foremost philosophers. Even a casual perusal of this volume will make this last point quite evident.
