REVOLUTION IN HUNGARY
Paul E. Zinner
This penetrating analysis of the Hungarian Revolution and of the events that led up to it is based on extensive interviewing of refugees, close study of documentary sources, and profound reflection upon the nature of the Communist totalitarian dictatorship and the conditions of its downfall.
The author traces the history of Hungary from the collapse of the old regime at the end of the Second World War to the fateful extinction of the flame of revolution eleven years later. He describes the seizure of povi^er by the Communists, the imposition of a pervasive system of totaHtarian terror and control, and the development of unrest that followed the death of Stalin. He discusses in detail the intellectual ferment preceding the outbreak of revolution, and examines minutely the internal evolution of the Communist Party that played a central part in determining the direction of events. The parts taken by various groups—writers and intellectuals, students, workers, and Party cadres—are vividly and comprehensively reconstructed.
The drama of the revolution is revealed here for the first time in all its dimensions. The outbreak of violence the confusion of the Party command^ the indecisiveness of the first Soviet intervention, the swell of the revolutionary tide, parallel and contrasting developments in the capital and in (continued on back flap)
the countryside, the victory of the revokition, the reappearance of political parties, the role of Cardinal Mindszenty, the origin and growth of workers' councils, the menace of decisive Soviet intervention, the perfidy of Kadar, and the crushing of the revolution are authentically recounted and woven into a vibrant pattern reflecting the intricate and rapidly changing configuration of revolutionary developments.
This interpretative essay succeeds admirably in blending rigorous standards of scholarship and good creative writing. It is a masterful synthesis of one of the gripping historical developments of our time.

YUGOSLAVIA IN CRISIS, 1934-1941
By J. B. Hoptner
A close-up view of this crisis-ridden eastern European nation during the crucial seven-year period between the murder of King Alexander in 1934 and the lightning collapse of the regency and flight of young King Peter before the Nazi invasion of 1941. Using many documents never before available, Dr. Hoptner answers questions that have remained a mystery for twenty years: Why did a successful Yugoslav regime collapse in one bloodless hour? What part did Britain play in the coup d'état? And, how did the fate of Yugoslavia affect British, German, and Soviet military operations?
