This handbook presents a new approach to the teaching of external beam radiotherapy treatment planning, emphasising the diagrammatic representation of radiation isodose patterns. This method has universal applicability and is supported by over 150 diagrams, graphs and isodose distributions depicting the rangé of possible treatment plans. Several sections have been entirely rewritten for this new edition, to take account of the recent developments and information available in the field. Foremost among these is the introduction and widespread use of computer treatment planning systems, which are the subject of a completely new chapter. Other topics discussed include basic radiation physics, therapy machines, single- and multiple-field treatments for x-rays, cobalt-60 gamma rays and high-energy electrons, the effects of oblique incidence, tissue inhomogeneities, setting-up procedures and dose calculation methods.
