The Devils by John Whiting is based on a true story of lust and hysteria in a French town in the seventeenth century; in it the local priest prefers torture and martyrdom at the hands of the Church to confession of a crime he has not committed. Henry Livings's Nil Carborundum is a rip-roaring farce about an R.A.F. station during a mock invasion exercise; unlike the heroes of the two other plays, Neville Harrison, the cook, remains uninvolved and uncommitted in the confusion that surrounds him.
