This is an introduction to the geometry which, as the ancients taught and modern science now confirms, underlies the structure of the universe. The thinkers of Egypt, Greece and India recognized a long time ago that simple whole numbers and the elusive, irrational ones governed much of what they saw in their world and hence provided an approach to the Divine that had created it. Robert Lawlor sets out the system of number, shape and proportion that determine the dimension and form of both man-made and natural structures, from Gothic cathedrals to flowers, from music to the human body. He also lays out the thinking and theories of the geometers of old, and by involving the reader in practical work, for which only a straight-edge, a pair of compasses and a graph pad are needed, leads us with ease from simple first principles to a grasp of the dynamics of the logarithmic spiral, the Golden Proportion, the squaring of the circle and other ubiquitous ratios and proportions.
