This book filis an important gap in the history of the Singapore house and provides usefuí background information to enhance appreciation of the houses featured in this book. These houses are the works of nine design-oriented architectural practices that have consciously moved away from the uniformity of specuiative houses to test and experiment with residential design. They represent the benchmark in Singapore's architect-designed priváté homes in the iast decade of the 20th century. In residential design, they represent the cutting-edge of the architectural profession at the outset of the 21 st century. Powell has organized his material under five broad thematic sections: 1. Using vernacular forms. 2. Contemporary vernacular. 3. Rethinking typoiogies. 4. Focus on the shophouse. 5. Beyond modernism. Many full colour illustrations, exquisitely hand-drawn plans and elevations are added features of Powell's work. Features of this book: • Identifies and analyses the major trends in the design of houses in Singapore. • Fills an important gap in the available literature on the history of the Singapore house. • Highlights outstanding houses in Singapore built between 1988-2001. More than 180 illustrations, plans and sections. The New Singapore House will be of great interest to architects, social historians, sociologists, the building trade, architecture students, and the lay reader interested in lifestyle, design and interiors.
