Photo by Ci ROBERT TOWNSEND Robert Townsend who was born in 1920 is married, has five children and lives in Locust Valley, Long Island. He has had a distinguished business career. From 1949 he spent thirteen years as a director of the American Express Company before joining Avis Rent-a-Car Corporation in 1962. There, in three years, first as president, then as chairman, he turned this tiny company into a highly profitable, internationally respected organization. At Avis he learned, and applied, much of the wisdom contained in his book. Following his own advice he bowed out of Avis in 1965, his job completed. When he cashed his chips following his resignation, people kept asking him to help with their businesses. He ran out of reasons for saying "No". He wrote this book which will enable him to say, "Buy my book, take whatever you can from it, and then call me."
