Robineon Jeffere:
Fcogmente of an OlDec Fucy By Bcothec Antoninue
"It is some kind of West Coast disease." With these words a distinguished New York critic rejected the "over-commitment" of Robinson Jef-fers. Now Brother Antoninus, one of the Coast's most committed poets, seeks to demonstrate once again the truth of the old adage that the rashness of the prudent is the valor of the brave. The only ranking American poet to frankly acknowledge Jeffers as his master, Antoninus pleads with unabashed fervor for a revaluation of his spiritual forbear, and his conviction is such that his prose takes on something of the arresting vigor of his verse. Rebuking Jeffers' friends and foes alike. Brother Antoninus probes the epicenter under the California quake, localizing its power in the inexhaustible energy that survives all its critics. More than a volume of criticism, this unprecedented testament is nevertheless a work of profound analysis.

Rebuking Jeffers' friends and foes alike. Brother Antoninus probes the epicenter under the California quake, localizing its power in the inexhaustible energy that survives all its critics. More than a volume of criticism, this unprecedented testament is nevertheless a work of profound analysis.
"In this book we have not only an important text on a great California poet who far transcends the regional setting he chose hilt a major statement too of the beliefs and critical powers of another significant poet who also lives in this area but whose writings are also possessed of universaliti/." — James D. Hart
Brother Antoninus was born William Everson in Sacramento in 1912. His encounter with the work of Jeifers at Fresno State College changed the course of his life. Leaving school to make his way as a poet he married, bought a vineyard, and moved to establish a press of his own. Drafted as a conscientious objector he spent World War II in an Oregon work camp, and returned to San Francisco to publish The Residual Years and win a Guggenheim. He remarried, but in 1949 separated to embrace Catholicism, subsequently entering the Dominican Order as a lay brother in 1951. Besides The Residual Years his religious verse includes The Crooked Lines of God, The Hazards of Holiness, and The Rose of Solitude. This, his twentieth volume, is his first book of prose. A critical selection of his poems, The Achievement of Brother Antoninus, has been edited by William Stafford. Brother Antoninus currently resides at Kentfield Priory in Marin County, California.
