Roger Lockyer focuses his study ort the major themes of politics and religion, presenting a comprehensive view of current interpretations. He takes as his starting point the victory of Edward IV at Tewkesbury in 147 1, showing how Edward laid the foundations for the Tudor restoration of a strong monarchy. It was this monarchy-wJiich had to deal with the major problems caused by the Protestant Reformation, the rapid increase in population and unprecedented inflation. Under the Tudors it was reasonably successful, but the accession of the Stuarts brought new strams as well as intensifying old ones, and the middle years of the seventeenth ' century saw the collapse of the monarchy and the temporary establjshment of the republic in England. This, in turn, caused a reaction which léd to . the apparent restoration of the old order, but Roger Lockyer concludes his book by arguing that the expansion of English trade, the increasing complexity of government, and the hardening of divisions within the political nation led to significant changes in practice, even though the tcaditional forms were retained.
The author's masterly grasp of the events and ideas of this period gives the reader Q0t only a clear view of the cornplexity of issues involved bu.p also an ins-ight into their fascination. Roger Lockyer casts a new eye over the major ' themes: the role of Parliament in Tudor England and under the early Stuarts; the nature and timing of the English Reformation; the meaning of Puritanism; and the causes of the civil war. This edition also incorporates whole new areas of study, opened up by recent research. Much more is now known about the lower section^ of English society, including the poor, and also about the elusive 'middling sort'. Education and its influence upon society; demographic changes; urban developments and changes in the structure of urban and rural society - all these and many other areas of investigation have extended the current view of Tudor and Stuaft Britain. An extensive bibliography also helps the reader to delve further into any area of particular interest. ' ¦ Vissza
