Roget's Thesaurus is a collection of synonyms on a grand scale. In addition he invented a slide-rule, a pocket chessboard; was the government's expert on the London Water Works; wrote for the Encyclopedia Britannica on subjects ranging from Electricity and Electrodynamics to Solid Geometry and Asphyxia; dabbled in mnemonics, astronomy, entomology, geography-and in his spare time took up botany. It was from this that the thesaurus was bora, for the idea came as he listed words in the way in which botanists classi^ glants and their families.
