From a small Latin settlement on the Tiber, Rome grew to become a great civilisation whose genius dominated most of the known world. Rome continued to exert considerable influence over Western thought centuries after Ladn had ceased to exist as a living language. Roman legends, like the Greek legends Rome inherited have become part of the European heritage.
This book traces the grovrth of Roman beliefs from primitive to State religion. It shows how, with the expansion of empire, Rome opened up to a great influx of exotic religion and philosophy and these are also described. Epicureanism, Stoicism, Mithraism, the cult of Isis and other creeds all struggled for ascendancy until finally giving way to a new import from the East: Christianity.

Stewart Perowne is a historian and archaeologist with a life-long interest in classical Rome. Through the mythology described in this book he gives a vivid and rewarding insight into the mind and character of this remarkable people.
Stewart Perowne, OBE, K St J., FSA, was born in 1901 and educated at Haileybury College, Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, of which he is now an Honorary Fellow, and Harvard University, USA. He is best known as an orientalist, archaeologist and historian, having travelled widely, particularly in the countries of the Near East.
In 1927 he joined the Palestine Government Education Service and between 1934 and 1937 he was Assistant District Commissioner in Galilee, Assistant Secretary in Malta and Political Officer in the Aden Protectorate. Between 1939 and 1951 he held important government posts in Baghdad, Barbados and Cyrenaica.
Since 1951 his career includes the discovery of the ancient city of Aziris, being appointed UK Adviser to the UN Assembly in Paris and Assistant to the Bishop in Jerusalem for refugee work.
Among his many books and publications he has written: Herod the Great, The Later Herods, Hadrian, Caesars and Saints, The End of the Roman World, Holy Places of Christendom, The Journeys of St Paul and The Archaeology of Greece and The Aegean.
