GAUGUIN
Gauguin had one of the most extraordinary lives of any nineteenth-century artist. Everything that he did, from the moment of his decision to become a painter, was done in the service of his art. That is why it is essential in any examination of this superb artist's work to review simultaneously the events of liis life.
It was not until he was over thirty that Gauguin resigned from his firm of stockbrokers in order to devote all his time to painting. From then onwards all his efforts were directed towards discovering the best means of expressing his intensely personal vision, a search which took him to Brittany, Aries, Panama and Martinique. Finally, believing that his art -which had by then developed far beyond his earlier Impressionism - could no longer flourish in a culture which he considered inimical to the artist's temperament, Gauguin left France for Tahiti in May 1895 and never returned.
