It was well received upon publication, as it was the first knot book directed to the climber. The knots were usable, and the drawings were clear; the descriptions short and definitive.
But, since seven years had passed, it was felt that it should now be updated, to include the advances made by our rapidily expanding scientific and technological age. But no less important was the amazing advances made in the attitude andapitudes of a new school of climbers. A man was sought to do the revision who was well known as a climber, a mountaineer editor, and a writer. Royal Robbins, famed for his climbing, both in the U.S. and in Europe, was selected and undertook the revision.
