He came to Australia in 1964 at the age of 21 and followed a career as an electronic engineer, but turned his fish hobby into full-time employment in 1978. He has dived extensively throughout the west Pacific and east Indian Ocean as far as Japan and the Maldives. The author of Coastal Fishes of South-Eastern Australia and Tropical Reef Fishes of the Western Pacific, he has also written numerous articles and scientific papers, and is well known for his involvement in television documentaries such as the ABC's Nature of Australia series and Wolves of the Sea.
