The papers included here represent the most up-to-date state-of-the-art survey in the field of acid deposition, at least in the countries of the European Community. The main purpose of the Workshop, the proceedings of which appear in this volume, was to collate present knowledge of acidic deposition at the Earth's surface and to present some new scientific ideas, including a specification of the most important research needs. The Workshop was stimulated by concern for damage to forest and freshwater ecosystems in various European regions, attributed at least in part to acid deposition originating from air pollution - so-called 'acid rain'. The main purpose of the Workshop, the proceedings of which appear in this volume, was to collate present knowledge of acidic deposition at the Earth's surface and to present some new scientific ideas, including a specification of the most important research needs. The Workshop was stimulated by concern for damage to forest and freshwater ecosystems in various European regions, attributed at least in part to acid deposition originating from air pollution - so-called 'acid rain'. After a review paper on effects of acid deposition on terrestrial ecosystems, the main emphasis is placed on atmospheric processes relevant to the acid deposition problem. Main topics dealt with include: the formation of atmospheric acidity; the natural background precipitation acidity; the trend developments of precipitation pH in Europe; the source regions for acid rain; and the chemical composition of cloud water.
Audience
The book will be of particular value for all environmental protection institutions, and will be of interest for those involved in the fields of atmospheric science, forestry, hydrology, electric power generation, meteorology, agriculture and soil biology.
