Sitting at the top of Poplar Street is the architectural gem of historic downtown Macon, Georgia, a city of elegant and distinct architecture, unharmed by wars and rumors of wars. St. Joseph Catholic Church began construction on this site in 1889 and completed it in 1903 amid much pomp and circumstance. It was described in The Macon News when the Carrara marble altars were installed in 1918: "During the last ten years all passersby have gratified their love of the beautiful by observing closely the perfections of proportions and ornamentation which give so much grace to the external structure. But no one, who has not mounted those wide marble steps and entered the arched portals to examine at leisure the myriad beauties within, can comprehend what a gem of architectural splendor has been created in our midst. Wonderful and striking as is the church viewed from the street, it gives no adequate idea of the enchantment and magnificence of the interior Those who love the Gothic style, with its cruciform plan, graceful pillars, beautifully interlacing arches, mullioned windows in which the most exquisite stained glass representations of sacred subjects are set, will find the whole interior arrangement a panorama of

delights, a joyful surprise for eager eyes and a soothing vision for world-wearied souls."
The passing years have only enhanced the beauty of the Church at the top of Poplar Street. Saint Joseph Catholic Church: A Living History pays tribute to that unsurpassed beauty in this pictorial history of one of Macon's most venerable institutions. The edifice that is St. Joseph Church would not have been possible without the sacrifices of its founding members, many of whom were blue-collar workers with limited incomes. As The Macon News article expressed it, "This splendid specimen of pointed architecture is the offering made to our city by the zealous, self-sacrificing Catholics of Macon and is the realization of their long cherished dreams and represents the substantial outlay of funds which they gladly contributed to carry out so grand and worthy an undertaking."
Once readers have finished the last page of this splendid book, they will want to climb the marble steps leading to the Church, and see again, or for the first time, the wonder that is St. Joseph Church. For long-time member or first-time visitor, it is always a new experience.
