Patricia MacLachlan was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming. A graduate of the University of Connecticut, she has worked as an English teacher and an active member of the board of a local family service agency. She is a frequent lecturer on the subject of children's literature, and has conducted workshops at several universities and colleges. She lives in western Massachusetts with her husband, Robert, and has three children, John, Jamie, and Emily.
