The rapids, says author Frances M. Heath in Sault Ste. Marie: City by the Rapids, created a "unique and enticing ecosystem which encouraged the settlement of the area." Heath's recounting of the Ojibway tale of the creation of the rapids (". . . the bubbles are her tears . ") begins her informed and colorful tale of a city that began as a meeting place for the Native Peoples. Illustrated by more than 100 black-and-white historical illustrations and 16 color pages, Heath's narrative guides the reader forward into the period of French expansionism, when "Bawaiting" became a Jesuit mission and "The captains of this Nation . . . invited our Fathers to take up their abode among them." During the era of the fur trade, the Sault lay on an important route of the North West Company, and played a role in the rivalries of the three trading companies. The resolution of those conflicts boded well for the Canadian fur trade, but resulted in a bust period for the settlement on the St. Mary's River.
