This book contains the texts of eighteen television interviews with well-known scientists who discuss their lives, the beginnings and pursuit of their careers, as well as somé of their exciting achievements in different scientific fields. All are outstanding intellectuals of Hungárián origin. The questions of the interviewer and editor of this book, István Kardos, are not primarily of a technical nature, for it was the scientist, both the priváté individual and public figure, that he wished to introduce to the viewer, and now, the reader. The manner adopted by the scientists is casual and entertaining. They recall childhood memories, and early incidents which influenced their choice of a career. For example, György Alexits, while ill in bed, once chanced to take up a textbook on mathematics, and Albert Szent-Györgyi relates that it was only "a husband' s cowardice" that led to the discovery for which he won a Nobel Prize.
