The past few decades have seen an ever closer integration of neurology and psychiatry, and nowhere has this been more obvious than in the field of epilepsy. It has been recognised that many patients with epilepsy suffer not only from psychiatric morbidity, which partly reflects the social disadvantages associated with the disorder, but alsó from biological vulnerabilities. One aspect of the ever-expanding interface between seizure disorders and psychiatry has been the use of anticonvulsant drugs for the management of affective disorders, especially bipolar disorders. Although this strategy has been in place for somé time, it has recently been reinforced by the introduction into clinical practice of several new anticonvulsant drugs, somé of which alsó have potential for the management of affective disorders.
