JANOS KADAR was born in Fiume in 1912. A typewriter mechanic by trade, be joined ^e labour m^ement in ISZS, and was Sne of the organizers of the young Comr^flpist vyorkers' movement Ijn 193t he became a member of the Central Committee of tlie Federatioi^ ofA^ung Communist Workers, and also joined the party. In 1942, he became a member of the Central Commijttee of the illegal Communist party, in 1943, its secretary. He directed the organization of the Budapest police in the spring of 1945, and was for â:fime head of the Cadre Department of the Central Leadership. Mihjs^ier of Home Affairs from 1948, in 1951 he was arrested on false charges and imprisoned; he was rehabilitated in 1954. First Sécretary of the Party Committee of the 13th district of Budapest, and then^ofvP-ést County until 1956, he was a mernber of the Central Leadershj,p and of the Political Committee of thé :Hungarian Working People's P^rty and secretary of the Central Leadership from July to October. Ih early November 1956, the Hungarian Socialist Workéjs' F^arty and the Revolutionary Workers' and Peasants' Government were instituted under his leadership. He becarhe First Secretary of the Hungariâri Socialist Workers;, Party in 1956, and held the post of Prime Minister as well in 1956—5ff, and 1961—65.
