Seven brothers growing up wild on their farm in Southern Finland, irked by the demands civilization lays on them, particularly by the preposterous demand that they must learn to read, decide to abandon their farm and live a free and merry life in the backwoods. They move accordingly with horse, dogs and guns into the wilds and there build themselves a cabin in magnificent forest country well stocked with game.
What befell them in their new home, their battles with bears and wolves and with the temptations a passing prosperity arising out of a terrific encounter with forty savage bulls bring them, is described by Kivi in scene after scene of heroic adventure, serious and mock-serious, yet always of Homeric sublimity. No less packed with incident, with humour and poetry, is the sequel: how necessity ultimately compels the brothers to work, how by grit and determination they create a fine new pioneer farm — and with scarcely less toil get the...
