LITERATURE
Seventeenth-Century English Literature
This is a new edition of the volume first published in the Home University Library in 1950, In this survey of the literature of her special period. Dame Veronica Wedgwood manifests her quality as a critic whose firm standards of judgement are founded upon a generous interest in both major and minor writers. She has revised her book throughout in points of detail; some sections, including that on Milton, have been more extensively changed; and the bibliography has been brought up to date.
C. V. Wedgwood was created a D.B.E. in 1968, and in 1969 achieved the rare distinction of the Order of Merit. She holds honorary degrees from several British and American imiversities, and in 1966 was elected an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

OXFORD PAPERBACKS UNIVERSITY SERIES
The aim of Oxford Paperbacks University Series is to provide authoritative introductions to most of the important branches of the humanities and sciences. The series thus maintains the aims of the Home University Library, which was founded in 1911 and came under the Oxford imprint in 1941; all the enduring books in that series, like this one, will gradually be produced in OPUS in new editions after careful revision. New books too, will be added regularly to OPUS, and their authors, like their HUL predecessors, will be experts in their subjects, but selected also for their lucidity in presenting their learning to the layman.
