The demand for listening practice materials based on authentic speech has prompted the development of LISTENING IN AND SPEAKING OUT, INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED. These materials present samples of spontaneous spoken American English to help close the gap between "classroom English" and the English that students are likely to encounter on their own. LISTENING IN AND SPEAKING OUT gives students the opportunity to listen in on conversations among real people—people who joke, argue, interrupt, hesitate, occasionally make natural grammatical errors or sometimes have little to say. The spontaneous interaction of the speakers allows students to see that hesitations, noncommittal interjections and lack of response can be appropriate conversational tools to express a variety of emotions.

LISTENING IN AND SPEAKING OUT, ADVANCED consists of a Student's Book and a 50-minute cassette. Each of the ten units in the book is based on two unscripted, unrehearsed recordings: a Monolog and a Dramatization. The Monologs are anecdotes that cover light but thought-provoking topics such as "Honesty," "Advertising" and "Eavesdropping." The Dramatizations are situations acted out spontaneously, which incorporate an element of conflict or disagreement in order to expose students to expressions of strong feelings. The students' listening skills are developed through a variety of exercises that guide them from general to focused listening. They are also provided with numerous activities to develop their speaking skills, from paraphrasing the recorded material and preparing their own monologs, to acting out situations and discussing controversial topics. The experience of listening in on the language forms and functions that native speakers use to communicate helps build students' confidence to speak out in English.
Detailed descriptions of the exercises and an outline of suggested procedures for using LISTENING IN AND SPEAKING OUT are given in the Introduction. A complete Tapescript of the recorded material and an Answer Key are found at the end of the book. Vissza
