The Social and Political Thought of Kari Marx
SHLOMO AVINERI Senior Lecturer in Political Theory The Hebrew University, Jerusalem
Ever since the discovery of Marx's Early Writings, most of the literature concerned with Marx's intellectual development has centred around the so-called gap between the 'young' Marx, who was considered to be a humanist thinker, and the 'older' Marx, who was held to be a determinist with little concern for anything outside his narrow theory of his-torical materialism. He alsó discusses the various aspects of Marx's thought against the background of its intellectual origins, showing its ambi-valent indebtedness to the Hegelian tradition. In bringing out the dialectical relationship between capitalism and socialism in Marx, Dr Avineri contends that the Hegelian legacy shaped both Marx's vision of future society as well as his view of the proletariat as a 'universal class'. It is this legacy, the author concludes, which alsó foreshadowed the dilemmas faced by later Marxist theoreticians.
Shlomo Avineri is Senior Lecturer in Political Theory at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He studied at the Hebrew University and the London School of Economics. Dr Avineri is editor of Kari Marx on Colonial-ism and Modernization (1968), and published a Hebrew translation of Marx's Early Writings. During 1966/67 he was Visiting Lecturer in the Department of Political Science at Yale University. Vissza
