SIR WALTER SCOTT (1771-1832) was the son of a Scottish lawyer. As a child he had an illness which had several effects: he was never ab!e to walk well, and his schooling was interrupted; but these troubles gave him the time to search the countryside for old songs and stories. In 1792 he qualifled as a lawyer. At the age of thirty-one a collection which he had made of the old story-poems of Scotland was printed, followed by his own long poem, The Lay of the Last Minstrel. He alsó joined in the business of his printer. Many other poems of his were prinfed as well as his collection of the poetry of Dryden. In 1812 he had enough money to build a fine house at Abbotsford and to begin to live there as a country gentleman. Then he began to write his famous stories, the Waverley Novels. At first they were printed without his name, and he wrote one or more every year until his death. In 1826 he and the men who shared his business found themselves ruined. He worked so hard that his health broke down, but when he died and the right to print his books was sold, there was enough money to pay the rest of the debt and save his honour.
