In the two years since the closing of Vatican Council II in Rome there is clear evidence that the discussions which took place there and the documents which were the formal result have caused great intellectual stimulation in the Church throughout the world.
There is considerably less evidence that this intellectual renewal is having a corresponding effect on the practical observances of the Church at all levels or on the lives of individual Christians. In fact, the preponderance of attention seems to be given, to the difficulties, disturbances and resistances provoked by minor adjustments in ecclesial practices and formulations of doctrine. The full momentum of renewal, the full pentecostal conversion that is implicit in the Church's turning away from old ways has hardly begun to be felt.
