The Slovak nation has never been populous, which is best illustrated by the fact that all the neighbouring states have populations at least twice as big as Slovakia's. In fact, the Slovak Republic as a country and the sovereign state of the Slovak people emerged as late as the 20th century. The wars, military operations and campaigns associated with Slovakia's subjugation and annexation, whether they occurred in the distant or recent past, brought about far-reaching changes in all walks of life for the winning and losing communities. Reasons for conquering other nations were numerous. Among the most common was the desire to seize a country's human and material resources, while simultaneously taking control of its geographical area and strategic routes.

This monograph, written by historians from the Military History Institute in Bratislava, is intended to contribute to the flourishing body of Slovak military history. As its title suggests, Slovakia - Military Chronicle surveys the most important military events and milestones in. the history of the Slovak people and Slovakia itself. Even in the 21st century, when Europe is dominated by integration processes, and the principle of civil society is increasingly emphasised, the importance of re-examining one's past has not decreased. In this respect, military history - along with its political, cultural, social or economic counterparts - forms an integral part of general and national history. The purpose of this publication and military history as such is not to promote war: quite the opposite. Lessons learned from the past should serve as a source of knowledge for maintaining peace and preventing conflict and violence. Should this book enrich the reader in this respect, it will have served its main purpose. Vissza
