Alain Robbe-Grillet has long been regarded as the outstanding writer of the nouveau romon, as well as its major spokesman. In these short pieces, written between 1954 and 1 962, we see the germs of the techniques and thematic obsessions that culminated in such masterpieces as In the Labyrinth, Jealousy, and The Voyeur.
"The Dressmaker's Dummy" is a short experiment in the technique, later used in Jealousy, of forcing the reader to assume the consciousness of the narrator. The mirror which provides the reflection in "The Dressmaker's Dummy" becomes, in "The Wrong Direction," a pool of rain water reflecting an inverted world. The mood and landscape of "The Shore"—high cliffs, sea, sand, and birds—are further explored in The Voyeur, and the elements of the setting of "Scene" reappear in the treatment of the narrator's room in In the Labyrinth.
