Social democracy and education have enjoyed a longstanding relationship, in the early days of the labour movement, teachers played a prominent role, not only by paving the road to emancipation for their pupils, but also by influencing the programmes and culture of the social democratic parties in Europe. Now, a century later, the quality of education and its inequalities are again major concerns for social democrats. Their mission seems clear: the stimulation of better education and more equal opportunities in education must form the heart of European social democracy's programme. Former Labour leader Tony Blair formulated this mission in a simple slogan: 'Education, education, education.' Realising this mission will be far from simple. Raising the level of educational performance is a complex matter; resolving the persistent inequalities in education will be just as difficult.
