These essays are written to mark the retire-ment of Maurice Dobb from the Reader-ship in Economies in Cambridge University. The contributors are economists and historians from many parts of the world. The unifying theme, economic growth and planning under socialism and capitalism, has been central to the major part of Maurice Dobb's work.
The material is grouped under four headings. First, there is a section devoted to selected problems in the economic theory of growth, including contributions by Professor Johansen of Oslo, Professor Solow of M.I.T. and Professor Sen of Delhi. The second and third sections deal with certain practical problems of economic growth, notably the relationship between market mechanisms and planning in both socialist and capitalist économies.
