This selection of the speeches and articles by János Kádár, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party and Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Hungarian People's Republic, is a historical document of unusual significance, for it gives an authentic picture of a decisive phase in the development of the Hungarian people's democracy. This phase began with the crushing of the counter-revolutionary uprising of 1956—in the course of which the internal and external enemy shook the people's power—and found completion with the consolidation of the people's democracy which laid secure foundations for further development.
The volume opens with the speech addressed in February 1957 to the workers of Nógrád County, one of the major mining regions of Hungary.
